Die Gemeinde liegt im Oberen Gailtal zwischen den Gailtaler Alpen im Norden und den Karnischen Alpen im Süden, die zugleich die Staatsgrenze zu Italien bilden.
Die Gemeinde ist in die vier Katastralgemeinden Grafendorf, Reisach, Kirchbach und Waidegg gegliedert. Das Gemeindegebiet umfasst folgende 31 Ortschaften :
