Irschen liegt im oberen Teil des Drautales, es ist der vorletzte Ort in Kärnten vor der Grenze zu Osttirol. Das Gemeindegebiet wird im Norden von der Kreuzeckgruppe und im Süden von den Gailtaler Alpen begrenzt. Irschen ist 123 Straßenkilometer von Klagenfurt, 114 km von Udine im Friaul, 196 km von Salzburg, 203 km von Innsbruck und 385 km von Wien entfernt.
