Die niederösterreichische Stadtgemeinde Melk liegt am rechten Ufer der Donau und wird in Fließrichtung gesehen als „das Tor zur Wachau“ bezeichnet. Teile der Stadt, wie das Stift Melk, sind Teil des UNESCO-Weltkulturerbes Wachau. Melk ist die Bezirkshauptstadt des gleichnamigen Bezirks.Die Stadt Melk liegt zwischen den kleinen von rechts in die Donau mündenden Flüssen Melk und Pielach an einem Donaualtarm.Das Stift liegt auf einem Berg, der zur Donau nach Norden hin steil abfällt. Das Stadtzentrum zieht sich den vergleichsweise flachen Westhang hinunter.
