Das Schloss Schönbrunn geht in seiner heutigen Form zunächst auf eine von und für Kaiser Joseph I. geplante Residenz zurück, die Kaiserin Maria Theresia später im 18. Jahrhundert für ihre Familie zur gemütlichen Sommerresidenz umbauen ließ. Das Schloss liegt seit 1892 im 13. Wiener Gemeindebezirk, der seit damals Hietzing genannt wird. Der Name Schönbrunn bezieht sich auf einen Kaiser Matthias zugeschriebenen Ausspruch. Er soll hier im Jahr 1619 auf der Jagd eine artesische Quelle entdeckt und darüber erfreut ausgerufen haben: „Welch’ schöner Brunn!“
