Das Alpbachtal ist das, was Geologen eine aufgeschlossene Antiklinale nennen. Das sind Schichten, die gefaltet sind und die Form eines A haben (siehe Abbildung). Der Kern (oder die unterste Schicht) dieser Antiklinale besteht aus Schiefer. Aber der größte Teil der Spitze dieses 'A' im Alpbachtal ist weg-erodierte (=aufgeschlossene). Das hat damit zu tun, dass der Schiefer viel schneller verwittert als beispielsweise die etwas jünger gelegene Kalksteinschicht. Der Schiefer ist auch wasserspeichernd, und das Wasser dringt also nur wenig ein und fließt hauptsächlich ab. Dadurch wird er auch noch schneller erodiert als der Kalkstein, den man hier vor allem auf den nördlich gelegenen Gipfeln (Gratlspitze und Hochstrickl) findet.
Der Schiefer stammt aus dem Ordovizium. Der Kalkstein aus dem Devon.
