Im Juli 2012 wurden der Salzburger Lungau und die angrenzenden Kärntner Nockberge von der UNESCO als Biosphärenpark ausgezeichnet. Es umfasst den gesamten Salzburger Bezirk Tamsweg und angrenzende Gebiete der Nockberge in Kärnten. Damit ist das Gebiet im Grenzbereich der Bundesländer Salzburg und Kärnten eine „Modellregion für nachhaltige Entwicklung“.
