Sie entstehtsüdlich der Kalten Kuchl im Tiefental im Gemeindegebiet Rohr im Gebirge durch den Zusammenfluss der Quellbäche Dürre Schwarza und Grüne Schwarza. Nach kurzem Lauf westwärts schwenkt sie in ihre obere Haupttalung, die Gegend. Ein Stück nach Schwarzau Markt fließt sie durch das Höllental, zwischen Rax- und Schneebergmassiv.
