Die Wiener Straßenbahn, in der Wiener Umgangssprache auch als „Bim“ oder veraltet „Tramway“ bezeichnet, hat ihren Ursprung in einer von 1865 an betriebenen Pferdetramwaylinie. Wenig später wurde die Wiener Tramwaygesellschaft gegründet. Ab 1872 existierte die Neue Wiener Tramwaygesellschaft als Konkurrent. 1883 fuhr die erste Dampftramway. 1897 wurde die Elektrifizierung begonnen und die Kommunalisierung eingeleitet. Der Ausbau des Straßenbahnnetzes erreichte seinen Höhepunkt in der Zwischenkriegszeit.
