In de Oostenrijkse hoofdstad Wenen rijden trams sinds 4 oktober 1865, aanvankelijk in de vorm van paardentrams. Vanaf 27 oktober 1883 kwamen er ook stoomtrams in dienst.
De eerste paardentramlijn was er een van Schottentor naar Hernals; dit traject bestaat voor een groot gedeelte in de huidige vorm als lijn 43 nog steeds.
