Im Westen grenzt er an den Bezirk Innsbruck-Land, im Osten an die Bezirke Kufstein, Kitzbühel und Zell am See , im Norden an Bayern und im Süden an Südtirol.Der Bezirk umfasst auf 1.843,18 km² einen Teil des Unterinntals, das gesamte Zillertal mit seinen Seitentälern und das Achental mit dem Achensee. An Gebirgen hat er Anteil an den Tuxer Alpen, Zillertaler Alpen, Kitzbüheler Alpen, dem Karwendel und dem Rofan. Höchste Erhebung ist der Hochfeiler in den Zillertaler Alpen mit 3510 m Seehöhe, tiefster Punkt im Inntal mit durchschnittlich 540 m Seehöhe.
