Der Heilige Amandus hat im Jahr 630 zwei Abteien an dem Ort gegründet, an dem später Gent entstanden ist. Die Abtei St. Bavo befand sich an der Mündung von Leie und Schelde (die alte keltische Bezeichnung Ganda bedeutet übrigens Mündung), die Abtei St. Peter lag weiter südlich auf dem Blandijnberg. Im Laufe des 9. Jahrhunderts entstand rund um die Abtei St. Bavo eine Handelsniederlassung, die jedoch später von den Normannen zerstört wurde.
