Die Moervaart, ein südlicher Abzweig der Durme, wurde 1531 begradigt und mit verschiedenen Brücken versehen. Moervaart, Zuidlede (bereits 1379 begradigt) und andere Gewässer in der Moervaartdepression waren unter anderem für den Transport von Torf und Brennholz nach Gent wichtig. Die Ausbeutung der Torf- und Moosflächen war eine der Hauptwirtschaftsaktivitäten in Moerbeke im Mittelalter.
