El Moervaart, una ramificación meridional del Durme, fue rectificado en 1531 y dotado de varios puentes. Moervaart, Zuidlede (ya rectificado en 1379) y otros cauces en la depresión de Moervaart eran importantes, entre otras cosas, para el transporte de turba y leña hacia Gante. La explotación de los terrenos de turba y pantano fue una de las principales actividades económicas en Moerbeke durante la Edad Media.
