Hasselt ist seit 1839die Hauptstadt der belgischen Provinz Limburg und seit 1967 Sitz des Bistums Hasselt.Hasselt liegt am Albert-Kanal und an dem Fluss Demer. Es liegt 45 km nördlich von Lüttich an der A 13 und etwa 10 km südlich des Autobahnkreuzes Lummen . Es liegt etwa auf halber Strecke zwischen Aachen und Löwen.
