Im Jahr 1940, zwischen dem 22. und 30. Mai, wurde heftig um die Bunker von Gijzenzele gekämpft.
Ab dem 20. Mai wurde von Gent aus die Verteidigung des belgischen Territoriums organisiert. Die Deutschen entschieden sich, nicht in der Nähe des Kanals Gent-Terneuzen anzugreifen, sondern im Gebiet der Schelde. Unter anderem wurde heftig um die Umgebung von Kwatrecht und Gijzenzele gekämpft, wobei die Zahl der Toten auf beiden Seiten sichtbar anstieg. Schließlich fiel Gent am 23. Mai in deutsche Hände, wodurch sich die belgische Armee zurückzog zur Leie und dem Entwässerungskanal, der letzten Ausgangsbasis.
