En 1940, entre le 22 et le 30 mai, de violents combats ont eu lieu pour les bunkers de Gijzenzele.
À partir du 20 mai, la défense du territoire belge a été organisée depuis Gand. Les Allemands ont choisi de ne pas attaquer près du canal Gand-Terneuzen, mais dans les environs de l'Escaut. De violents combats ont notamment eu lieu dans la région de Kwatrecht et Gijzenzele, provoquant une augmentation flagrante du nombre de morts des deux côtés. Finalement, Gand est tombée entre les mains allemandes le 23 mai, poussant l'armée belge à se replier vers la Lys et le canal de drainage, le dernier bastion.
