En 1940, entre el 22 y el 30 de mayo, se libró una intensa lucha por los bunkers de Gijzenzele.
A partir del 20 de mayo, se organizó la defensa del territorio belga desde Gante. Los alemanes optaron por no atacar cerca del Canal de Gante-Terneuzen, sino en las proximidades de la Escalda. Se luchó intensamente en los alrededores de Kwatrecht y Gijzenzele, aumentando el número de muertos en ambos lados de manera visible. Finalmente, Gante cayó en manos alemanas el 23 de mayo, lo que llevó al ejército belga a retirarse hacia el Lys y el canal de drenaje, la última base de operaciones.
