Der Autor Henry Robbert Addison, der im 19. Jahrhundert um die Welt reiste, verliebte sich sofort in Mechelen. Er besuchte die Stadt 1843. Er verfasste einen Reiseführer 'Belgium as She Is'. Darin sagte er voraus, dass Mechelen von reichen Briten überflutet werden würde. Nie zuvor hatte er eine so ordentliche Stadt gesehen.
