Die Abtei von Kortenberg lag auf dem alten Curtenbergh, jetzt Eikelenberg. Der Überlieferung nach wurde auf dem Berg eine Einsiedelei von einer gottesfürchtigen Dame namens Duva gegründet. Bald sammelte sie einen Kreis von Geistlichen um sich. Sie lebten in kleinen Häuschen, die sich um eine Kirche gruppierten. Eine Urkunde aus dem Jahr 1095 bezeugt die Schenkung des Altars durch Walcher, den Bischof von Kamerijk. Graf Gottfried I. von Löwen und dreißig herausragende Edelmannen gewährten dabei ihre Unterstützung. Die Schwestern stellten sich unter den Schutz von Unserer Lieben Frau und dem heiligen Amandus.
