Das Arboretum ist ein Experiment von Leopold II. Im Jahr 1902 ließ der König Hunderte von Baumarten aus den Kontinenten der Nordhalbkugel nach Tervuren umpflanzen, um zu sehen, welche Bäume hier überleben konnten und welche man dann in Belgien pflanzen könnte.
