Das Naturschutzgebiet ist 29 ha groß und liegt auf dem Gebiet der Stadt Oudenaarde und der Gemeinde Maarkedal. Der Wald liegt auf der Koppenberg, einem 78 Meter hohen Hügel, der aus der Scheldevlakte emporragt. Das Reservat wird von der flämischen Behörde Agentschap voor Natuur en Bos verwaltet. Das Reservat ist als europäisches Natura 2000-Gebiet anerkannt und Teil des flämischen ökologischen Netzwerks. Im Rahmen der europäischen Naturschutzziele sollen langfristig 350 Hektar zusätzliche Wälder in den Flämischen Ardennen geschaffen werden; das Kluisbos wird über Feelbos, Beiaardbos, Fonteinbos und Ingelbos, Hotond-Scherpenberg, Kuitholbos und Spijkerbos mit dem Koppenbergbos verbunden.
