The nature reserve covers 29 hectares and is located within the territory of the city of Oudenaarde and the municipality of Maarkedal. The forest is situated on the Koppenberg, a 78-meter high hill that rises from the Scheldt plain. The reserve is managed by the Flemish government agency Agency for Nature and Forest. The reserve is recognized as a European Natura 2000 area and is part of the Flemish Ecological Network. Within the European nature objectives, an additional 350 hectares of forest will eventually be created in the Flemish Ardennes; the Kluisbos will be connected to the Koppenberg forest via Feelbos, Beiaardbos, Fonteinbos and Ingelbos, Hotond-Scherpenberg, Kuitholbos, and Spijkerbos.
