„Wilre“ wird erstmals offiziell in einer Schenkungsurkunde aus dem Jahr 1096 zitiert, als Gräfin Ida von Bonen dort liegende Ländereien an das Kloster von Munsterbilzen verschenkte. Später fügte man „wout-, walt-“ hinzu, um das Dorf aufgrund seiner Lage bei einem Wald von dem einige Kilometer weiter gelegenen Wilre bei Maastricht zu unterscheiden.
