Der Standort der Stadt Halle ist kein Zufall. Das Tal, das der Zenne ausgegraben hat, macht in Halle eine Biegung um die 33 Meter, da der Fluss die harten Gesteine seines Oberlaufs verlässt und seinen Lauf in die weicheren tertiären Böden fortsetzt. Die Felsformationen oberhalb der Stadt verhindern die weitere Nutzung der Wasserstraße für den Güterverkehr, und Halle ist somit der Endpunkt des Transports auf der Zenne.
An dem Umschlagplatz, der hier entstanden ist, verläuft die wichtige Verbindungsachse, die zwischen dem fruchtbaren Lehmgebiet rund um Nivelles und dem ebenso fruchtbaren Lehmgebiet rund um Lennik liegt. Das spätere Kloster von Nivelles besitzt diese beiden fruchtbaren Lehmgebiete, die durch die breiten Täler der Zenne und der Hain-Braine voneinander getrennt sind, und das bestimmt zu einem großen Teil die Geschichte von Halle.
