Während des Achtzigjährigen Krieges (1568-1648) wurde Damme von den spanischen Besatzern zu einer Garnisonsstadt mit einer sternförmigen Befestigung ausgebaut. Nachdem die militärische Bedeutung von Damme verschwand, entwickelten sich in den Gräben verschiedene Biotope. Dort findest du einen Moorwald, Schilfbereiche und einzigartige Moorpflanzen wie das Blasenstrauch und den Moorfarn sowie typische Schilfvögel wie die Wasserralle, den kleinen Rohrspy und den Dodaars. Im Winter rasten dort tausende von "Frostgänsen", hauptsächlich Kolkehl- und Kleine Rohrgänse. Komm und genieße dieses wunderschöne Stück Natur! Von der Beobachtungshütte hast du einen schönen Blick auf alle Vögel.
