Hier in Schiplaken und dem gleichnamigen Wald wurde die grausame Schlacht von Schiplaken während des Ersten Weltkriegs ausgefochten. Diese Schlacht wird eindringlich beschrieben in dem Buch von Stefan Hertmans, Krieg und Terpentin: "Im Dorf sahen wir die zischenden Ruinen von Häusern im Regen, die durch Mordfeuer getöteten Tiere und Menschen, die ausgebrannte Kirche, die erst sieben Jahre zuvor von Kardinal Mercier eingeweiht worden war. Das war alles, was wir von der grausamen Schlacht von Schiplaken wahrnahmen, die es in alle Schulbücher schaffen würde."
