Der Flughafen Grimbergen wurde 1939 als militärisches Hilfsflugfeld erbaut und in Betrieb genommen. Bei der Invasion Belgiens durch die deutschen Truppen fiel er bereits am 18. Mai 1940 in feindliche Hände. Auf Befehl der Luftwaffe wurde er weiter ausgebaut. Nach der Befreiung im September 1944 kam der Flughafen in den Besitz der Alliierten, die ihn bis zur Übergabe an die zivilen Behörden im Jahr 1946 weiterhin nutzten. Von da an wurde er fast ausschließlich für Sportflugzeuge verwendet. Auch Sabena nutzte den Flughafen zur Ausbildung seiner Piloten. Die Bewirtschaftung des Flugbetriebs liegt derzeit in den Händen des gemeinnützigen Vereins Recreatief Vliegveld Grimbergen.
