Das über 100 Hektar große Reservat wurde 1970 gegründet und umfasst einen Heide-rest und ein Nadelwaldgebiet. Im Reservat befindet sich die größte noch bestehende Wacholderpopulation Flanderns mit etwa 7000 Sträuchern. Der Heiderbos ist auf europäischer Ebene als Teil des Natura 2000-Gebiets 'Bosbeekvallei und angrenzende Wald- und Heidegebiete in As-Opglabbeek-Maaseik' geschützt. Seit 2018 ist es Teil des Nationalparks Hoge Kempen.
