La riserva che misura oltre 100 ettari è stata fondata nel 1970 e comprende un resto di brughiera e un'area di foresta di conifere. Nella riserva si trova la più grande popolazione di ginepro ancora esistente delle Fiandre, con circa 7000 arbusti. Il Heiderbos è protetto a livello europeo come parte dell'area Natura 2000 'Bosbeekvallei e le aree boschive e di brughiera adiacenti a As-Opglabbeek-Maaseik'. Dal 2018 fa parte del Parco Nazionale Hoge Kempen.
