Die Wanderung verläuft auf und rund um den Kruisberg, einen Teil des Kempischen Hügelzugs. Dieser langgestreckte Sandrücken erstreckt sich von Retie bis Grobbendonk und wurde durch alte Meeresablagerungen geformt. Das ist zum Beispiel zu sehen an Fossilien von Muscheln, die hier und da gefunden werden können. Der Rücken bildet eine sogenannte Cuesta mit einer steilen Südseite zur Kleinen Nete und einem sanften Hang zum Tal der Aa. Der Bereich nördlich der Bahnlinie nach Turnhout ist touristisch ausgebaut (Achtung für Mountainbiker!). Auf den Bosbergen südlich der Bahnlinie hat die Natur Vorrang und es wird an der Heide-Erneuerung gearbeitet.
