The walk runs on and around the Kruisberg, part of the Kempen ridgeline. This elongated sand ridge extends from Retie to Grobbendonk and was formed by ancient sea deposits. This can be seen, for example, in fossils of shells that can be found here and there. The ridge forms a so-called cuesta with a steep southern side towards the Kleine Nete and a gentle slope towards the valley of the Aa. The area north of the railway line to Turnhout is touristically developed (watch out for mountain bikers!). In the Bosbergen to the south of the railway line, nature comes first and heather restoration is being carried out.
