Die heutige Haftanstalt in Wortel war bis 1933 eine Landstreicherkolonie. Mit der Abschaffung des Landstreicherrechts wurde die Strafanstalt genutzt, um Verurteilte unterzubringen. Die Gebäude wurden umgebaut, besser gesichert und renoviert.
