Das Rathaus am Grote Markt besteht aus zwei Teilen: der Tuchhalle mit unvollendetem Belfried und dem Palast des Großen Rates. Warum wird der Belfried nicht fertiggestellt? Der Tuchhandel geht im vierzehnten Jahrhundert zurück und daher gibt es kein Geld mehr, um das Gebäude fertigzustellen. Zweihundert Jahre bleibt der Belfried ein Rohbau, bis er im sechzehnten Jahrhundert endlich ein provisorisches Dach erhält. Inzwischen ist der Belfried UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe.
