Auf einer figurativen Karte des Landes Aalst von Jacques Horenhault, datierend aus dem Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts, wird nordöstlich des Schlossgeländes ein alter Dorfteich dargestellt. An einem Teil des Geländes, wo sich damals der Teich befand – an der zum Stadtzentrum gerichteten Seite des Bettelhovebeek – wurde um 1925 die Villa Cantaert errichtet und der zugehörige Garten angelegt. Die verbleibenden Parzellen des früheren Teichgeländes wurden respektive an drei Seiten zugebaut und größtenteils von Betriebsgebäuden eingenommen.
