Einer der bekanntesten Neerpelter ist zweifellos Militärpfarrer Sooi Willems (1910-1990). Er reiste durch ganz Flandern, um den Soldaten Mut zu machen. Überall war er ein gern gesehener Gast mit einem fesselnden Redestil. Neerpelt ehrt ihn mit einem Brustbild am Sooi Willemsplatz. Auf demselben Platz steht das Friedensmonument „Take care of your dreams“. Diese Träume werden durch bunte Wolken dargestellt, die auf das Multikulturelle in unserer Gesellschaft hinweisen.
