Eine schönere Statue konnte sich Briek Schotte nicht vorstellen. Die kantige Haltung, die Arme tief in den Haltegriffen, ein willensstarker Kopf,… Der Tieltser Künstler Jef Claerhout schuf mit seinem Werk das Ebenbild von Briek. Seit 1996 blickt „der Letzte der Flandrier“ auf den Dorfplatz von Kanegem. Die Statue ruht auf einem Streifen aus Kopfsteinpflastern, das Symbol für die Flandrier.
