Zur Anlage des Stadtfriedhofs Leuven wurde während der französischen Herrschaft beschlossen. Der Friedhof liegt in Heverlee zwischen der Tivolistraat, der Bierbeekstraat, der Pleinstraat und dem Philippsite. Er wurde jedoch erst wirklich in Betrieb genommen, als die Gemeinden dafür verantwortlich gemacht wurden und dort Gebühren erheben durften. Bis dahin wünschten die Menschen, möglichst nahe bei den Kirchen beerdigt zu werden. Wenn möglich, am liebsten direkt in den Kirchen selbst, aber das war nur den wohlhabenden Snobs vorbehalten. Dieses Brauchtum wurde jedoch unhaltbar, da die Kirchen das Zentrum der Gemeindegemeinschaften waren. Daher wurde ein Gelände außerhalb des Zentrums der Stadt und der damaligen Wohnkerne gewählt.
