Reinold Haesebrouck (1892-1951) ist mit Clara Van de Caeyzeele verheiratet und Vater von fünf Kindern. Er ist Arbeiter bei La Brugeoise.
Im Jahr 1917 wird er in Diksmuide bei einem Versuch, einem verwundeten Kameraden zu helfen, schwer verletzt. Er wird dafür besonders ausgezeichnet, aber bleibt selbst bis zum Ende des Jahres 1918 im Krankenhaus. Die Ärzte entfernen 42 Splitter aus seinem Körper. Seine Wunden verheilen, aber sein Augenlicht ist für immer verloren.
Am 10. November 1922 wird dem blinden Haesebrouck eine ehrenvolle Aufgabe aufgetragen. Während einer Zeremonie im Stadion wählt er aus fünf Särgen den unbekannten Soldaten aus. Sein Sarg wird noch am selben Tag unter der Kongress-Säule in Brüssel feierlich begraben. Die anderen vier Soldaten ruhen auf dem Soldatenfriedhof von Steenbrugge.
