Im Weiler Elsleuken lebten Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts einige wohlhabendere Bewohner wie Jan Wellens von den Drie Snellen. Er besaß ein Pferd und sechs Kühe. Das Haus wird bereits 1731 unter dem Namen der '3 snellen' erwähnt. 1802 wurde es gründlich umgebaut von Landwirt Jan Ant(oon) Wellens und Anna Maria Crets. Sie hatten das Haus 1796 gekauft. Ein Gedenkstein trägt ihre Initialen: IAW+AEC.
Entlang der großen Verkehrsadern, wie der Mechelser Straße, traf man mehrere Gasthöfe: Neben ‘De Snelle’ gab es in unserer unmittelbaren Umgebung auch ‘Den Eik’ in Averbode, ‘De Heibloem’ in der Gijmel und ‘De Liter’ in Ourodenberg.
Ein ‘snelle’ war ein kleiner Becher, der in einem Zug ausgetrunken werden konnte.
