Der Ortsname Brüssel kommt von Bruocsella im Frankischen ‘bruoc’ + ‘sella’, was sich zu Broekzele entwickelte, was so viel bedeutet wie ‘Siedlung (zele) beim Moor (broek)’. Von diesem ‘broek’ ist heute nicht mehr viel übrig. Daher war die Entscheidung der Brüsseler Region aus dem Jahr 1984, dieses Gebiet mit hoher Biodiversität zu schützen und es 1994 zu einem Naturschutzgebiet zu machen, eine sehr wertvolle Entscheidung. Seit 1998 ist das Naturschutzgebiet sogar als Natura 2000-Schutzgebiet anerkannt.
