Von Nevele über Landegem, Merendree und Drongen nach Vinderhoute fließt der Bach die Alte Kale. Es ist einer der wenigen Wasserläufe in der Region, die nicht begradigt wurden.
Die Anbindung der niederen Wiesen an die umliegenden Kübler und Bögen ist noch sehr erkennbar. Das Tal ist eine der am besten erhaltenen Landschaften in Ostflandern und wurde 2008 endgültig geschützt. In den Wiesen entlang der Alten Kale kommen wertvolle Pflanzen- und Vogelarten vor. Auch in Merendree findest du einen der schönsten Wanderwege im Naturschutzgebiet das Alte Kale-Tal.
