The Oude Kale stream flows from Nevele via Landegem, Merendree, and Drongen to Vinderhoute. It is one of the few watercourses in the region that has not been straightened.
The connection of the low-lying meadows with the surrounding banks and bulges is still very recognizable. The valley is one of the best-preserved landscapes in East Flanders and was officially protected in 2008. In the grasslands along the Oude Kale, valuable plant and bird species can be found. You will also find one of the most beautiful walking routes in the nature reserve of the Oude Kale Valley in Merendree.
