Van Nevele via Landegem, Merendree en Drongen naar Vinderhoute stroomt de beek de Oude Kale. Het is één van de weinige waterlopen in de streek die niet is rechtgetrokken.
De aansluiting van de laaggelegen meersen met de omliggende kouters en bulken is nog zeer herkenbaar. De vallei is een van de best bewaarde landschappen van Oost-Vlaanderen en werd in 2008 definitief beschermd. In de graslanden langs de Oude Kale komen waardevolle planten- en vogelsoorten voor. Ook in Merendree vind je één van de mooiste wandelroutes in het natuurgebied de Oude Kalevallei.
