In den Jahren 1880 bis 1890 wurden zwölf moderne Festungen um die belgische Stadt Lüttich gebaut – sechs große und sechs kleine. Ihre Errichtung geht auf den belgischen General Henri Alexis Brialmont zurück. Die Festungen wurden als Forts mit einem Abstand von etwa sieben Kilometer von der Lütticher Innenstadt ausgeführt. Sämtliche dieser Forts wurden mit Beton gebaut und mit den damals modernsten Waffen ausgestattet.
