Auf diesem hübschen, von Linden gesäumten Platz ist der flämische Mathematiker und Physiker Simon Stevin (° Brügge 1548, † Den Haag 1620) ausgestellt, nach dem dieser Platz benannt wurde. Er erfand das Dezimalsystem für Brüche .
Bis 1819 stand hier das Westvleeshuis oder Groot Vleeshuis von Brügge, einer der beiden Orte, an denen Fleisch gehandelt wurde. Noch früher wurde der Ort „der Oude Vrijdagsmarkt “ genannt. Es ist wahrscheinlich der älteste Marktplatz in Brügge.
Auf dem Platz befindet sich ein alter Brunnen mit der Aufschrift „Diese Wasserpumpe befand sich vor dem mittelalterlichen Metzgerhaus. Restauriert 1980“ und eine alte Stadtpumpe . Es gibt zwei Grenzposten in der Nähe der Loppemstraat.
