Simon Stevinplein Bruges

On this pleasant square, neatly lined with lime trees , the Flemish mathematician and physicist Simon Stevin (° Brugge 1548, † The Hague 1620), after whom this square was named, is on display. He invented the decimal system for fractions .

Until 1819 the Westvleeshuis or Groot Vleeshuis of Bruges stood here, one of the two places where meat was traded. Even earlier, the place was called 'the Oude Vrijdagsmarkt '. It is probably the oldest market square in Bruges.

In the square there is an old well with inscription "This water pump was located in front of the medieval butcher's house. Restored in 1980" and an old city pump . There are two border posts near the Loppemstraat .
