Das Schwein ist ein Weidetier, das am liebsten den ganzen Tag im Boden wühlt. Unsere Muttertiere wohnen und leben das ganze Jahr über in einem Sauenstall, wo sie nach Herzenslust im Schlamm wühlen und ('weiden') in frischer Erde graben können. Eine einfache Hütte mit frischem Strohh bietet ihnen etwas Schutz vor Sonne oder Kälte, aber normalerweise sieht man Manon und die anderen Sauen das Leben außerhalb eines Stalls genießen, wo herrliche Schatten- und Futterbüsche gepflanzt sind. Auch die anderen Schweine profitieren im Scharreltuin von der Freiheit, im Freien zu tun, was ihr Instinkt ihnen eingibt.
