Der Anbau von Flachs fand entlang der Leie zwischen Petegem-Deinze und Wervik sowie im Mandeltal statt. Die Wurzelqualität des Leiewassers war ausgezeichnet, und der Flachs aus der Leiregion war als der beste der Welt bekannt. Die Leie erhielt daher ihren Spitznamen „Der goldene Fluss“. Aufgrund von Verschmutzung und Geruchsbelästigung wurde das Rösten im Fluss reduziert und in Röstereien verlagert. Heute, besonders in Frankreich, wird der Flachs meist auf dem Feld geröstet (Tauwurzen).
