Die malerische Stadt Stavelot liegt tief verborgen im bewaldeten Tal der Amblève.
Stavelot verdankt seine Entstehung dem Heiligen Remaclus, der dort im Jahr 648 ein Benediktinerkloster gründete. Die Abtei entwickelte sich systematisch zu einem Zentrum religiöser und weltlicher Macht. Bis 1795, dem Jahr, in dem die Abtei aufgehoben wurde, verwaltete sie, wie das Fürstbistum Lüttich, völlig unabhängig.
Die Abtei wurde unter der französischen Herrschaft aufgehoben. In den beeindruckenden Klostergebäuden sind nun unter anderem das Rathaus und einige Museen untergebracht. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurde die Stadt stark getroffen. Dennoch kann man in einigen Straßen noch wunderschöne Fachwerkhäuser entdecken.
