Het schilderachtige stadje Stavelot ligt diep verdoken in de beboste vallei van de Amblève.
Stavelot heeft zijn onstaan te danken aan de H. Remaclus, die er in 648 een benedictijnerklooster sticht. De abdij groeit stelselmatig uit tot een centum van religieuze en wereldlijke macht. Tot 1795, het jaar waarin de abdij werd opgeheven, bestuurde zij net zoals het Prinsbisdom Luik geheel onafhankelijk.
De abdij werd opgeheven onder het Franse bewind. In de indrukwekkende kloostergebouwen zijn nu ondermeer het stadhuis en enkele musea ondergebracht. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd de stad zwaar getroffen. Toch kan men in sommige straten nog prachtige vakwerkhuizen ontdekken.
